Do it your own way...

No town, village or city is the same. In fact no street is the same. Every community is different, full of a glorious mix of diverse people, with different interests and commitments. What works in one place may not translate to another, so the ideas here are all suggestions. You, yes you reading this, are the expert as to what would be useful, helpful or a blessing in your community . . . you’re the expert because you live there, you know the people, the area and the issues!
The key to effective social action projects is to run activities that are relevant to those you hope to serve. It may be worth spending a few evenings knocking on doors of people in your area, explaining you’re from the local church and asking them what they think the greatest needs in the area are. From this you can build a picture as to what people perceive problems are, and the church can be involved in finding solutions, offering alternatives and leading the way. You may not be able to do everything (like build a swimming pool or new community centre) but you may be able to offer a youth club for local kids who have nothing to do on the weekends or provide gardening services for elderly people who are still waiting for someone from the council to help them out!
